Boston.com, known for its collection of stunning photographs, has compiled a collection of best news photographs of 2008, to be presented in a series of three articles.
In this amazing photo, lightning bolts rage above the Chaiten volcano in southern Chile on May 2, 2008. This was Chaiten’s first eruption in thousands of years. Electrical storms broke out above the erupting volcano, a common occurrence that scientists still cannot fully explain. (REUTERS/Carlos Gutierrez)
